Hand Therapy

Hand therapy, a specialty practice area of occupational therapy, involves treating orthopedic-based upper-extremity conditions to optimize the functional use of the hand and arm.

Hand therapy typically addresses the biomechanical issues underlying upper-extremity conditions. However, our occupational therapy practitioners bring an added dimension to this specialty area. They use an occupation-based and patient-centered approach that identifies what each patient wants to be able to do in daily life that is fulfilling, necessary, and/or meaningful, and emphasizes the performance of desired activities as the primary goal of therapy.

Conditions seen by the occupational therapy practitioner specializing in this area include:

  • Fractures
  • Amputations
  • Burns
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Surgical Repairs of Tendons & Nerves
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Recovering from surgery can feel daunting. We work closely with your physician to return you to your pre-injury functional level.

Our therapists have treated hundreds of patients with joint replacements over the years. Whether it’s a knee, shoulder, hip, or other joint replacement, we provide a hands-on approach to control pain, restore range of motion and strength, and help you return to activities that are meaningful to you.

You might benefit from post-surgical rehabilitation if you’ve had joint replacement surgery, arthroscopic surgery, or surgery to repair:

  • Fractures
  • Ligament Tears
  • Rotator Cuff Tears
  • Meniscal Tears
  • Labral Tears

  • Frozen Shoulder

Neurological Rehabilitation

We work with individuals suffering from a variety of neurological disorders or diseases. Common problems of patients with neurological disorders include paralysis, vision impairment, poor balance, difficulty with daily activities such as getting dressed, and an overall loss of independence, all of which occupational therapy can enhance. We work together to promote active participation in daily activities or occupations that are meaningful to them.

You might benefit from neurological rehabilitation if you have experienced these conditions:

  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Concussion
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
LVST BIG

LSVT BIG is an intensive, effective, one-on-one treatment created to help people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and other neurological conditions address walking, balance and other activities of daily living such as writing, dressing, and getting up from low chairs.

People living with PD or other neurological conditions often move differently, with gestures and actions that become smaller and slower. They may have trouble with getting around, getting dressed and with other activities of daily living.

LSVT BIG effectively trains improved movements for any activity, whether “small motor” tasks like buttoning a shirt or “large motor” tasks like getting up from sofa or chair or maintaining balance while walking. The treatment improves walking, self-care and other tasks by helping people recalibrate how they perceive their movements with what others actually see.

    Balance Training

Several conditions can affect your balance, and when your balance is off, your risk of falling increases significantly.

Balance training helps build strength in your core and legs so that you become more steady and less likely to fall. Vestibular rehabilitation may also be included depending on the cause of your balance problems. This involves specific exercises to manage dizziness, vertigo, motion sensitivity, and postural control issues.

Balance training can be a part of a physical therapy or occupational therapy program. Our therapists can also help you determine if an assistive device would be appropriate to maximize your safety during mobility tasks.

You may benefit from balance training if you:

    • Are at risk for falling or have fallen in the past
    • Have weak muscles or limited mobility
    • Have difficulty walking or feel unsteady while standing
    • Have sensory issues such as numbness/tingling in your feet
